Mohib has written the following to share:
“My name is Mohib Hamad. I’m a 19-year-old university student from Beit Hanoun, north of the Gaza Strip. My life was going normally, and I was happy to have completed an academic year full of achievements. I achieved high grades in high school, fulfilling my dream and my father’s. My friends planned a trip for October 8, 2023, to celebrate our success, unaware that fate had a different destiny for us.
I suddenly woke up to the sounds of intense shelling and warplanes. We left our house in a panic, taking nothing with us. It felt as if I was saying goodbye to my home for the last time, the place we had painstakingly built and where we had lived the most beautiful moments of our lives.
We scattered in search of safety, finding no refuge other than the schools in Jabalia, which had been transformed into overcrowded shelters. We lived through difficult days amidst the sounds of shelling and corpses in the streets. After two weeks, we were asked to head to Rafah, a “safe area.” We didn’t hesitate, leaving everything behind to find ourselves sleeping on the floor of a school without blankets or clothes, amid the suffering of my elderly parents and three deaf sisters, to whom I couldn’t even explain what was happening.
After a while, we were forced to leave Rafah for the Al-Mawasi area in Khan Yunis, where we found no shelter and were forced to sleep outdoors amid harsh conditions of heat and cold.
Today, I don’t know what the future holds, but I believe good things are coming, and I trust there are good people who will help us on our journey toward a dignified life and a better future. Thank you for your interest in my story.”
